I-25 in Pueblo, Colorado getting $16M in improvements. Here's when road work starts.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin to resurface Interstate 25 in Pueblo next week to improve the heavily traveled highway, and motorists should be prepared for possible delays.

CDOT and its contract partner Martin Marietta will begin the project on April 15. Project work will range from mile point 92 and 102 on I-25 and includes resurfacing, milling and overlay work, among improvements to that stretch of road, according to a news release from CDOT.

The project will take in nearly all of I-25 in Pueblo. Mile point 102 is near Eagleridge Boulevard on the city's north side, and 92 is near the St. Charles Reservoir in southwestern Pueblo County. It is scheduled to be completed this fall.

The project is expected to “improve drivability and provide safer driving conditions for motorists,” the agency stated in the release. It is expected to cost nearly $16 million, according to CDOT.

“With repaving projects, it really is about duration and the last time the road was repaved because they have a lifespan,” said Amber Shipley, a spokesperson for CDOT. “It’s just time for most of Pueblo to get new paving. The majority of it is just in need (so it can) continue for the next 15, 20 years.”

Shipley added that the project area was on a list of highways and roadways that need repaving.

Crews will be working in sections along I-25 area so motorists can expect lane and shoulder closures that likely will cause traffic delays.

The project’s traffic impacts

Though work will be performed in phases and hours will depend on location, CDOT wants commuters to be aware what they can expect in construction zones.

Between mile point 92 and 95, road crews will work Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Motorists should expect single-lane closures in this area during that window.

From mile point 95 to mile point 102, crews will work overnight between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., when single-lane closures will also be active, Shipley said.

There will be an all-day single lane and shoulder closure in the northbound and southbound lanes between mile points 101 and 102 for one week. This is so crews can perform repairs and panel replacements in the area.

CDOT urged commuters to plan ahead, expect delays and on and off ramp closures and reduce speeds in work zones.

Crews will also work on pavement markings and roadway delineation as part of the project.
