The first time I ever tried a beauty subscription box, I was skeptical then pleasantly surprised. For one flat rate per month, I could get full-sized products of some of today’s leading beauty brands, some that I already knew and loved and others that had been on my radar but I hadn’t had time to try.

A subscription box is wonderful for people like me who never can commit to just one product, preferring to try an assortment of items to find what really works for them. But I’ll be the first to admit that one of the biggest issues for me when it comes to beauty boxes is the lack of products that cater to dark skin tones and thick hair types.

That’s why I was really excited to learn about Cocotique’s curated subscription boxes on Amazon.

Cocotique is a Black-owned subscription box that, for $25 a month, will send you a curated assortment of different beauty products, from hair care to makeup to essential everyday items. The brand showcases both established brands as well as Black-owned and POC-owned brands that are on the come up, giving products equal eyes and opportunities to thrive. Right now on Amazon, you can save $3 off of your first box and set up your subscriptions to receive a new box each month.

Now, maybe you’re not the person to want all the products in your box. That’s OK. The products make great gifts for family and friends. You can also gift this entire subscription box to the beauty lover in your life.

One customer wrote receiving the box feels like a present every month. “Everything in the box is a joyful surprise. I love all the items. It is like receiving a Christmas present to yourself every month.”

If you’re looking for a downside, the only major one to point out is that you cannot customize your box, which is standard for most subscription box services.

This subscription box does an amazing job of highlighting marginalized businesses and Black-owned brands, while also giving the customer products that work for our skin and hair type. While subscription boxes may be plenty, seeing a curated box for women of color by a Black woman is all too rare -- and undeniably exciting.
