27-year-old Bear man dies 3 days after hydroplaning on Route 1, hitting auto-carrier

A 27-year-old man died Saturday from injuries sustained in an Aug. 30 crash on Route 1 in Bear, Delaware State Police said.

The man has been identified as Carlos Segundo-Potrero, of Bear.

Police said Segundo-Potrero was merging onto Route 1 north from Route 40 east in a black 2007 Toyota Camry at 7:43 a.m. when he lost control of the car on the wet ground. The car hydroplaned across the grass shoulder and into the left lane of Route 1 north, according to police, where a yellow 2017 Volvo tractor towing a loaded auto-carrier was driving.

The driver's side of the Camry hit the front of the tractor, state police said, injuring Segundo-Potrero and his front-seat passenger, a 32-year-old woman. They were both taken to the hospital, where Segundo-Potrero died Saturday afternoon.

Police did not provide an update on the woman's condition, saying only that she was not in critical condition when she was first taken to the hospital.

The driver of the Volvo, a 49-year-old man from Ronks, Pennsylvania, was not injured, according to police.
