27-year-old man on motorized skateboard dies after struck by car in Delmar

A 27-year-old Laurel man riding a motorized skateboard was killed in Delmar Thursday after he was struck by a car.

According to a Delaware State Police news release, the victim was riding the skateboard in the center of Bi-State Boulevard, north of Allen's Mill Road, around 5:50 p.m. A Hyundai Tucson was traveling north on Bi-State Boulevard in the same area.

"For unknown reasons, the man swerved right in the Tucson’s path," the news release said. "The Tucson swerved right to avoid the pedestrian, however, he continued into the northbound lane and was struck by the Tucson."

The man on the skateboard was "forced onto the windshield before falling off," police said, while the Tuscon continued to swerve right and struck a mailbox.

The man on the skateboard was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police will identify him after his family is notified. The driver of the Tucson, a 21-year-old Fruitland, Maryland, woman, was not injured.

The road was closed for about four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Master Corporal K. Argo at 302-703-3264 or by sending a Facebook message to Delaware State Police. Information may be provided anonymously through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
