Traffic is backed up on Interstate 270 southbound in the western part of Franklin County after a crash involving a pedestrian near the I-270 exit to West Broad Street.

The ramps from Interstate 70 to Interstate 270 have reopened, as well as two lanes of I-270 southbound on the city's West Side after a pedestrian was killed on the highway.

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. Monday near the I-270 southbound ramp to West Broad Street. The pedestrian was struck on the freeway and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Maureen Kocot, public information officer for the Franklin County Sheriff's office, said the male pedestrian, who has not yet been publicly identified, had been driving on the highway when their car became disabled.

The pedestrian was walking in the berm on the right side of the road. Kocot said eyewitnesses reported seeing the suspect vehicle, a white Chevy 1500, swerving on the roadway. The truck swerved into the berm and struck the pedestrian, who was still in the berm area, and fled the scene on the West Broad Street exit.

Deputies from the sheriff's office have since located the driver, according to the sheriff's office. No charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon.

Two lanes of I-270 southbound between I-70 and West Broad Street are currently open. However, drivers are still encouraged to use I-70 westbound or Interstate 71 as alternative routes.

No additional information was immediately available. The Franklin County Sheriff's office is investigating the crash.
