This fall, three Athens restaurants will participate in a national event series that will allow their respective owners and chefs to prepare oyster dishes for ticket-holding customers.

The Peat & Pearls supper club's fall calendar boasts 32 exclusive dinners that will take place in eight different Southern states.

The Athens events are scheduled for Sept. 28 at home.made, Oct. 25 at Heirloom Cafe and Nov. 14 at Puma Yu's. Guests who purchase a membership with Peat & Pearls will be able to purchase tickets early and at discounted rates beginning at $55. General admission tickets will go on sale for $125 beginning Sept. 14.

Relationships between restaurants, farms gave Athens the nod

Peat & Pearls founder T.S. Strickland told the Banner-Herald that Athens was chosen as a supper club city because of the interconnectivity between restaurant owners and their relationships with the farms that supply the ingredients for the food.

"(Peat & Pearls) is really trying to build community in each of these cities around folks who have a similar set of values," said Strickland. "Athens has a critical mass of people who really care about good food, but also care about where their food comes from."

Puma Yu's chef and co-owner Pete Amadhanirundr, who recently won his second consecutive title at the Athens Farmers Market Sliced! competition back in July, is expected to open his beloved pop-up's brick-and-mortar location at 355 Oneta St. in August or September with co-owner and mixologist Ally Smith.

Heirloom Cafe chef and co-owner Jessica Rothacker will preside over the event at her 815 N. Chase St. restaurant, and home.made chef and owner Mimi Maumus is set to host the dinner at her 1072 Baxter St. location.

Peat & Pearls supper club features farm-to-table dinners

Founded in 2017, Peat & Pearls is a regional supper club with chapters in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and more. In each city, the club works with local chefs to produce monthly farm-to-table dinners and one larger tasting-style event each quarter that brings together chefs, farmers and club members from throughout the South.

Strickland said that the farmers who produce the oysters and other ingredients for the Athens dinners will be present at the events. The chefs are busy planning their dishes with consideration of current supply chain issues. According to Strickland, the oysters are expected be sourced from "a variety" of East Coast and Gulf Coast producers, including Georgia and the Carolinas.

"(Peat and Pearls) is a little bit different than some other supper clubs in that you don't have to be a member to attend our events," said Strickland. "We're trying to find that line between making these kinds of experiences sustainable and creating something that can help to support farmers and support the chefs who are involved."
