3 Bay Minette teens treated after reaction to vape pen at movie theater

SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WKRG) — Movie night at the Eastern Shore Centre’s theater turned out to be anything but entertaining for three Bay Minette teenagers.

Child tax credit expansion: Who gets the money if it passes?

“We have juveniles, 13 to 14 years of age, on a Saturday night come across a vape. They think they are going to have some fun and smoke a vape while they watch a movie — all of them have a physical reaction,” says Spanish Fort Police Chief John Barber.

Emergency Medical Services was called, and all three were treated and released from a local urgent care center. The vape pen called “Cake” was recovered and is now evidence at the Spanish Fort Police Department. It was gotten for just under $25 online and in the liquid, THC.

“Delta 8 THC. To be legal in the state of Alabama, it has to be less than .3 percent THC by volume,” says Barber. “That is what is being marketed for this thing.”

That’s the disturbing part for Chief Barber: What is really in that liquid?

“It is unknown exactly what you are getting in that liquid. What percentage of THC might (it) be? We are finding out these vapes are being marketed throughout the country, and they are not well-regulated. That’s what we are seeing where they are mixed in with fentanyl or some other known derivative.”

Barber applauds the quick action of the parents who were with the teens that night, their call for help, and the disciplinary actions they have taken.

He says no criminal charges will be filed.

As for the vape, Barber says it will be sent to the Department of Forensic Sciences to be tested to find out exactly what the ingredients are in this “Cake.”
