3 new cases of measles confirmed at South Florida elementary school

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A South Florida elementary school is dealing with an outbreak of measles after the first case was reported on Friday.

According to NBC affiliate WTVJ, three new cases were confirmed at Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston on Saturday, bringing the total to four cases.

WTVJ reached out to the Broward County Public School, which confirmed the three new cases in a statement.

“The health, safety and welfare of our students and staff remain our utmost priority;” the district said. “The district continues to work closely with the Florida Department of Health – Broward following three additional confirmed measles cases at Manatee Bay Elementary School. Chief Medical Officer for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Dr. Ronald Ford, told WTVJ that he expects to see some additional cases of the viral infection.

“If your child is immunized with both doses of the vaccine, the risk is very low of contracting measles,” he said. “If the child is not immunized, or for some reason is immunocompromised, then the risk is much greater.”

According to the Florida Department of Health, the last reported case of measles in Broward County was in 2019, with just one case reported.
