3 New Coronavirus Outbreaks Reported At K-12 Schools In Michigan

MICHIGAN — Three new outbreaks of the coronavirus have been reported in Michigan schools, according to the most recent data provided by state health officials Monday. In total, 61 new outbreaks were reported by the state Monday.

According to the data — which is provided weekly by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and charts new and ongoing coronavirus outbreaks based on location in the state and the type of setting they are present in — the 15 new outbreaks reported in long-term care facilities across the state is the most among the new outbreaks reported Monday.

Colleges and institutions of higher learning were locations of the second most outbreaks, according to the new information released Monday, with seven outbreaks reported.

Coronavirus outbreaks are defined by the state as two or more cases with a link by place and time, suggesting a shared exposure outside of a household.

Local health departments report the number of new and ongoing outbreaks they are investigating by the setting of the outbreak, the state said. Ongoing outbreaks are considered those that have already been identified in previous weeks, but have had at least one new associated case.

The state said that many factors, such as the lack of ability to conduct effective contact tracing in some areas, may result in significant underreporting of outbreaks.

One of the K-12 reports was made in Region 1 of Michigan, which according to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's MI Safe Start plan encompasses Clinton, Eaton, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston and Shiawassee counties.

The other two reports were made in Region 2N, which includes Macomb, Oakland and St. Clair counties.
