Three people were killed late Monday in a murder-suicide in Edgewater.

A man angered that his ex-girlfriend was seeing another man walked into a Narcotics Anonymous meeting in Edgewater on Monday where he shot the man, then took the woman hostage before killing her, police said.

Quinton Francis Hunter, 49, killed Ian Lee Greenfield, 59, and later Hunter shot his ex-girlfriend, Erica Yvonne Hoffman, 33, police said. After shooting them, Hunter shot himself, police said. Police believe Hunter was angry about the relationship between Greenfield and Hoffman.

"Mr. Hunter and Miss Hoffman were boyfriend and girlfriend at some point," Edgewater Police Chief Joe Mahoney said during a press conference. He said there was some kind of relationship and a new friendship between Greenfield and Hoffman, but he did not want to put a label on it.

Mahoney said jealousy might be a motive, but police are still investigating whether there was any other interaction between the two men.

About 20 other people attending the meeting fled after the initial shooting. But Hunter stopped Hoffman from leaving, holding her hostage, the release stated.

Hunter posted a Facebook Live video of himself from inside the building of the Narcotics Anonymous meeting at 515 N. Ridgewood Ave., according to Mahoney.

“When he was in the building, he posted Facebook Live, but did not say anything during the live portion. He was just heavy breathing in a very lunatic-type manner,” Mahoney said.

The 3-second video shows Hunter up close, breathing heavily, but nothing else can be seen or heard. The close-up shows claw-like tattoos over the left side of Hunter’s face.

Hunter appears to have biker clothes on, including a black patch with orange lettering reading "I am my brothers (sic) keeper."

There are two short videos of Hunter up close breathing. In between them there is a photo of two people who appear to be Greenfield and Hoffman.

Mahoney said it appeared that, based on the timeline, Hunter had already shot Greenfield and had fired several other shots before he went on Facebook Live.

“This was not a random shooting it was believed to be domestic in nature," Mahoney said. “Our condolences and prayers go out to the families of the victims. As for Mr. Hunter, I’m glad he’s no longer with us to harm anyone else.”

Mahoney said police were trying to determine where the three people lived. He said Greenfield and Hoffman were at the meeting as participants, but he did not say about Hunter.

Hunter's Facebook page lists Bunnell as his residence. He describes himself as a tattoo artist and carpenter. Hunter describes himself as single.

The banner over Hunter's Facebook page stated "Recovery. For anyone with the desire to stop drinking and drugging. Sharing experience, strength & hope."

Beneath Hunter's post at the scene of the shooting, concerned people posted, wondering what was going on.

"Are you ok my friend?" posted one. "You good bro?" posted another.

Police respond to 911 calls

The police received a call about 7 p.m. Monday that a person had been shot at Bridge the Gap during a Narcotics Anonymous meeting, according to the press release.

Hunter walked into the building after the meeting started and shot Greenfield at close range, fatally wounding him, the release stated. Hunter was not “brandishing” his gun when he walked in but drew it shortly after, Mahoney said.

"Within moments of entering the meeting, (he) shot Mr. Greenfield in close proximity,” Mahoney said. “He then struck Erica Hoffman with a handgun and took her hostage.”

Mahoney said police had conflicting reports from the approximately 20 people who fled the meeting about how many gunshots they heard.

Mahoney said that when police arrived, it was no longer an active shooter but a suspect with a hostage.

“In those situations, we don’t want to agitate the suspect,” said Mahoney, adding that could lead to the suspect harming the hostage.

The Southeast Volusia Regional Swat Team and Southeast Volusia Negotiations Team immediately responded. Team members tried to contact Hunter to negotiate a resolution, but he did not respond, the release stated.

Police used an armored vehicle to breach one door in the rear of the building and then got through a second door. They sent a robot in before officers entered.

They found Greenfield, Hoffman and Hunter dead in the meeting room, the release stated. No one else was in the building.

Hunter had a violent criminal history out of state for weapons charges, but none locally, Mahoney said.

“Greenfield and Hoffman appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds and lacerations; Hunter appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the release stated.

Edgewater Police detectives and the State Attorney's Office Homicide Investigations Unit are investigating the case.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families and friends during this difficult time,” the release stated.

“He had clear intent to shoot Mr. Greenfield and clear intent to harm Ms. Hoffman,” Mahoney said.

'A guy’s dead. He got shot in the head. He has a hostage.'

Some drivers on Ridgewood stopped their cars as people ran from the building and called 911. Some of the people who fled the building also called 911.

One woman told the dispatcher that Hunter, known as “Rags,” rode up on his motorcycle. Someone else said he was wearing biker gear.

Callers mentioned the claw-like tattoos on Hunter’s face.

One driver was speaking to 911 when a man who had been inside the building said someone had been killed. “A guy’s dead. He got shot in the head. He has a hostage!”

Someone also said: "One of the guys got shot in the back of the head."

Another 911 caller who had been attending the meeting said people had gathered when they heard a noise.

“All the sudden we heard a bang,” he said.

“He just grabbed somebody and stayed in the room … pushing somebody to the front of the room at gunpoint,” the caller said.

“Just started yelling something,” the caller said. “He shot this guy and then, and then he went to the front of the room, grabbed somebody and it looked like he was dragging them along.”
