Update: Driver dies after head-on collision in Fresno, CHP says. Other major injuries

UPDATE: Man killed in fiery multi-car crash ID’d by Fresno coroner. Two others had major injuries

A driver who was ejected on Highway 180 west of Kerman died Sunday after a fiery, three-car crash, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened at 8:30 p.m. at Highway 180 and Sonoma Avenue.

CHP spokesman Mike Salas said a Chevrolet sedan that was traveling westbound on Highway 180 veered to the left and sideswiped a Ford Mustang.

The Chevy then collided head-on into a Toyota Camry.

The driver of the Chevy, a 47-year-old Antioch man, was ejected onto the roadway and the car was engulfed in flames, Salas said. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The CHP helicopter took the Chevy driver to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

The drivers in the other cars — a 40-year-old Mendota man and a 44-year-old Bakersfield woman — were taken to the hospital with major injuries but they were expected to survive, CHP said.

Salas said it’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.

Westbound Highway 180 traffic was diverted at James Road.

Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies, Kerman and Mendota Police officers and two helicopters (Sheriff and CHP) assisted at the crash scene.
