3 injured after floor partially collapses at Wilmington construction site

Several people were injured Friday morning after a floor partially collapsed at a Wilmington construction site, according to the Wilmington Fire Department.

The incident occurred a little after 9:45 a.m., dispatch information shows. It was listed as a "rescue."

The Fire Department said three people were injured, two of whom were trauma patients. New Castle County Paramedics said a 48-year-old man and a 68-year-old man were taken to Christiana Hospital with possible head injuries, while a 31-year-old man was transported to Wilmington Hospital.

According to Wilmington Fire Chief John Looney, construction crews were almost finished pouring concrete at a building located at East Fourth and Shipley streets when the floor collapsed beneath them. About 300 square feet fell, Looney said.

One of the workers who was injured had to be removed from the wet concrete by firefighters.

"Fortunately, it's a good day as they were all minor injuries," Looney said.

The collapse occurred on the second floor of what will be a six-story apartment building, set to open this summer. Wilmington's Department of Licenses and Inspections will evaluate the rest of the structure with an engineer to determine how and why the floor collapsed, and whether the remaining construction is safe.

By 11:15 a.m., Wilmington fire personnel were wrapping up the scene. Roads that had been shut down due to the emergency response had reopened.
