3 movie tickets a month for $10? Here's how the new MoviePass works

The new MoviePass has launched, offering subscribers the option to watch up to a movie a day at over 4,000 commercial theatres. Here’s how it works.

What is a MoviePass?

The subscription service operates on a tier system, giving you a fixed number of credits each month that are used for movie tickets. Credits used are dynamic, with a movie’s credit value being based on demand, time of day and day of the week. This meaning that a midweek movie after work and the same movie on a weekend day will likely have different credit values.

You can save credits since they roll over for up to two months, but keep in mind you're not able to use them to get tickets for a friend.

How much is a MoviePass?

There are three tiers available. Here’s a breakdown.

Basic: It’s $10 a month, comes with 34 credits and allows you to watch 1-3 movies a month.

Standard: At $20 a month, you’re able to watch 3-7 movies a month. It comes with 72 credits each month.

Premium: It’s $30 a month, comes with 113 credits and allows you to watch 5-11 movies a month.

A fourth tier called "Pro" offers a movie a day with 640 credits, but this plan is no longer available on the MoviePass site.

How much credit can buy you a movie pass?

MoviePass hasn't said how the number of credits for a weekend or weekday movie will differ, but they do have a graph on their website that gives a sense of which days require more or less credits. From least to greatest it goes: Tuesday, weekday matinees, weekday evenings, weekend evenings and opening weekend.

What happened to the old MoviePass?

Launched in 2011, MoviePass originally allowed customers to watch a movie a day in theatres for just $10 a month. After dropping prices to $6.95 a month, the company began losing money and ultimately shut down, filing for bankruptcy in 2019.

What's the difference between the old MoviePass and the new one?

The main difference is that the old MoviePass allowed subscribers to see one movie a day for the month, where the new MoviePass comes with a limited number of tickets depending on the selected subscription tier.

Pricing is also different. Once a one-price system, the new MoviePass has different pricing options depending on the number of movies you want to see in a month.

Does it include IMAX?

No, the MoviePass only includes 2D standard screenings.
