3 NC-filmed movies, series are coming to screens this month. Here’s how to watch.

April is set to be a big month for movies and series filmed in North Carolina, with three big-name and highly anticipated productions headed to screens.

The projects include two film adaptations of popular novels and a thriller-mystery streaming series that has been in the works for almost two years.

We’ve compiled information on several productions’ plots, plus information on when and where they’ll be available for viewing. We’ve also included information on where each project was filmed within the state.

How to watch ‘One True Loves’ movie

What it’s about: Best-selling author Taylor Jenkins Reid’s 2016 novel “One True Loves” will come to life in theaters and on streaming services this month. The film, described as a “modern twist on a classic love story,” follows protagonist Emma’s journey as she chooses between the two loves of her life — Jesse, her husband who is believed to have died in a helicopter crash but then reappears after several years, and Sam, her old best friend with whom she reconnects and becomes engaged to after Jesse’s disappearance.

Key cast: Phillipa Soo, known for her role as Eliza Hamilton in the original Broadway production of “Hamilton,” portrays Emma. Luke Bracey, whose acting credits include “Holidate” and “Elvis,” plays Jesse. Simu Liu, known for his role as Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plays Sam.

How to watch: “One True Loves” premieres in theaters on April 7. On April 14, it will become available for digital streaming on platforms including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play and Redbox. Learn more at theavenue.film/movies/one-true-loves.

NC location info: “One True Loves” was filmed in the Wilmington area beginning in October 2021. The production was originally set to be filmed in Massachusetts, then was set to move to South Carolina instead. But the production relocated to Wilmington due to low vaccination rates against COVID-19 in South Carolina, Port City Daily reported.

How to watch ‘Florida Man’ streaming series

What it’s about: “Florida Man,” a seven-episode limited streaming series on Netflix, follows former police officer Mike Valentine as he is “forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend.” But “what should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey into buried family secrets, and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong,” Netflix’s official synopsis of the thriller-mystery project states.

Key cast: Edgar Ramírez, who played Gianni Verscace in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” plays Mike. Other stars include Anthony LaPaglia of “Without a Trace” and Abbey Lee of HBO’s “Lovecraft Country,” among others.

NC location info: “Florida Man” was filmed in the Wilmington area, including Carolina Beach. Port City Daily reported in October 2021 that The Point at Barclay, a retail center off Independence Boulevard in Wilmington, had been filled with cargo containers and “a combination of random building façades” for the production. A portion of Carolina Beach was closed for filming in August 2021, and town-operated parking lots were closed for filming in October 2021, WECT reported.

How to watch ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ movie

What it’s about: More than 50 years after Judy Blume’s beloved and best-selling coming-of-age story first hit bookshelves, it’s now coming to the big screen. The story focuses on 11-year-old Margaret Simon, who is “moving to a new town and beginning to contemplate everything about life, friendship, and adolescence,” the official film synopsis reads. Margaret, who has one Jewish parent and one Christian parent but has been raised without an affiliation to either, attempts throughout the story to discover her own identity — religious and otherwise.

Key cast: The film’s star-studded cast includes Rachel McAdams, who plays Margaret’s mom, and Kathy Bates, who plays Margaret’s grandmother. Abby Ryder Fortson, whose acting credits include “Transparent” and “Ant-Man,” plays Margaret. For each of them, “questions of identity, one’s place in the world, and what brings meaning to a life will draw them closer together than ever before.”
