INDIANAPOLIS – An Indiana man faces felony neglect charges in connection with an accident in which a 4-year-old girl was fatally shot by her 3-year-old brother.

Darrell W. Marberry, 63, of Lake County was arrested at his East Chicago home last week on charges stemming from the Nov. 29 shooting at a home in Lebanon, about 30 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

Officials said 4-year-old Izabella-Marie A. Helem was being cared for by her
grandmother and the grandmother's ex-husband, identified as Marberry. Marberry had been staying at the residence and was sleeping on the couch.

Police said Marberry left a handgun on the floor under the couch on the morning of the shooting.

The girl was shot once by a bullet that struck her left shoulder blade and the right side of her head, police said. Investigators are awaiting the autopsy results to determine the entrance wound and exit wound.

Marberry is currently being held in the Lake County Jail where he is awaiting extradition
to Boone County Jail.

No one else has been charged in the incident.
