3 people shot at Metro station in Washington, D.C., police say

Three people were shot at a Metro station in northeast Washington on Thursday, police said.

A woman, a teenage male and a juvenile male were injured in the shooting after a physical altercation broke out on the platform at the Benning Road station, Metro Transit Police said on Twitter. The teen suffered possibly life-threatening injuries, police said.

Transit police said the suspect fled the scene, but the Metropolitan Police Department said on Twitter there is "no ongoing threat." Trains are temporarily bypassing the station while police investigate.

The shooting comes a day after an off-duty FBI agent fatally shot a person at the Metro Center station in downtown Washington.

The agent and victim, both unidentified, got into an altercation and fell over a side wall away from the tracks, Executive Assistant Chief of Police Ashan Benedict told reporters at the scene Wednesday night. The struggle continued after the 8-foot drop and shots were fired, Benedict said.

The agent was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The FBI's Washington Field Office said in a statement on Twitter the Bureau's Inspection Division is reviewing the shooting.

"The FBI takes any shooting incident involving our agents or task force members seriously," the statement said.

The shooting also follows the acquittal of another FBI agent last week on attempted second-degree murder charges in the off-duty shooting of a man on a train approaching Medical Center Metro station in Bethesda, Maryland, in December 2020, the Washington Post reported Friday.

Meanwhile Wednesday, President Joe Biden again called for a ban on assault weapons during an annual vigil honoring victims of gun violence held by the Newtown Action Alliance Foundation at St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

“It’s just common sense. It’s simple common sense,” Biden said Wednesday. “Our work continues to limit the number of bullets that can be in a cartridge, the type of weapons that can be purchased and sold ... attempt to ban assault weapons, a whole range of things."
