3 Plano restaurants closed; dead roaches, ants found at 2 schools in health inspections

Three Plano restaurants were temporarily closed during the Sept. 24 to Oct. 28 health inspections and rodent droppings, live ants and dead roaches were found at two schools, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.

Taquerias Cervantez at 2819 W. 15th St., Fat Shack Plano at 6205 Coit Road and Fiery Nashville Hot Chicken at 151 W. Spring Creek Parkway were required to close due to no hot water. The three establishments were allowed to reopen after a follow-up inspection.

Dead roaches were found in the dry storage area of the kitchen at Clark High School, located at 523 W. Spring Creek Parkway. The school scored 96 during the Oct. 16 inspection.

Rodent droppings were found inside the dry storage room of the kitchen at Armstrong Middle School, located at 3805 Timberline Drive. Live ants were observed in the laundry room.

The inspector noted at the Oct. 24 inspection that the manager was working with pest control to solve the problem. An exterminator had visited the school the previous day, and another visit was scheduled for Oct. 27. In spite of the pest control issues, Armstrong scored 98.

The city of Plano scores restaurants on a 100-point system. A score of 100 is considered a perfect score and 70 is extremely poor. The following restaurants had low scores.

Hotbreads Plano at 4940 McDermott Road scored 73 on Oct. 25. The inspector noted that some food wasn’t held at a safe temperature. Residue was found on knives and in the microwave. Multiple air freshener cans were stored on top of the spice rack and an unlabeled chemical bottle was sitting next to a hand sink.

Saltgrass Steakhouse at 3320 N. Central Expressway scored 75 on Sept. 26. The dishwasher was broken, knives weren’t properly sanitized after use and a black mold-like substance was found on the salad spinner. The inspector also learned employees were using a household pesticide to spot treat for bugs instead of calling pest control.

Dimassi’s Mediterranean Buffet at 4940 State Highway 121 scored 77 on Oct. 27. Food wasn’t reheated to a safe temperature. Residue was found on several items, including the meat grinder, dough cutter machine and one of the dishwashers. The inspector found a bottle of mouthwash in the dough prep area and toothpaste and ointment stored in a drawer with a knife.
