3 Raleigh restaurants get ‘B’ grades: Triangle sanitation scores (May 9)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly roundup of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle dining spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of food-borne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Triangle counties for the week of May 3-9.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 57 inspections were completed between May 3 and May 9.

Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Four restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Barcelona Wine Bar (430 W. Martin St. in Raleigh) received a score of 87% during an inspection on May 8.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 22 standards. Of these, 11 were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included using a handwashing sink as a dump sink, prepared food sitting directly beside a handwashing sink without a splash guard in between and missing labels on sanitizer buckets containing toxic materials.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 95% in February 2023 and 94% in September 2022.

Chutneys (4121 Davis Dr. in Morrisville) received a score of 90% during an inspection on May 4.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 11 standards. Of these, six were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included a tray of biryani rice cooling on top of trashcan, a two-week old open bag of veggie patties in the reach-in cooler and a bottle of ibuprofen found stored on the shelf with spices.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 93% in December 2022 and 87% in November 2022.

Hako Sushi (2603-115 Glenwood Ave., Ste. 155 in Raleigh) received a score of 89.5% on May 4.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 10 standards. Of these, five were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included glassware soiled with lip stains and dried food debris, multiple raw food items (including chicken, beef, shrimp and quail eggs) stored above ready-to-eat food in the prep cooler and unlabeled bottles of sanitizer and cleaners.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 94% in October 2022 and 92.5% in May 2022.

Jumbo China (404-183 E Six Forks Rd. in Raleigh) received a score of 86% on May 5.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 14 standards. Of these, eight were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included not having a food thermometer, handling raw chicken then immediately handling ready-to-eat foods without a handwashing step in between and multiple knives and food containers soiled with food debris were stored as clean.

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 96% in October 2022 and 90% in May 2022.

No restaurants received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows 24 restaurant inspections were completed between May 3 and May 9.

Most restaurants received an A grade.

No restaurants received a B grade, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

One restaurant received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but lower than 80%.

GG Taste of Chicago Fish & Chicken (826 Fayetteville St., Ste. 103 in Durham) received a score of 78.5% on May 4.

  • The restaurant was in violation of 21 standards. Of these, 10 were considered critical violations.

  • Critical violations included blue green mold-like growth on the uncooked gyro meat in a six-door cooler, much of the produce in the six-door cooler had mold and soiled dishes in the “clean dish area.”

  • Some violations were corrected during the inspection.

  • The restaurant previously scored 86.5% in January 2023 and 95% in April 2022.

No restaurants received a failing grade.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows eight restaurants were inspected between May 3 and May 9.

All restaurants received an A grade.

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows 20 restaurants were inspected between May 3 and May 9.
