The work of 3 Reading Eagle reporters recognized in Pa. media awards

Jun. 2—The work of three Reading Eagle reporters has been recognized in the 2023 Keystone Media Awards.

Reporter Karen Shuey placed first in the ongoing news coverage category for a series of stories detailing issues with electronic polling books that Berks County used in the 2022 primary election. A mistake followed by several bad decisions led to confusion at the polls that ultimately required a Berks judge to extend voting by an hour.

Sports writer Rich Scarcella received a first-place award in the sports breaking news/event coverage category for stories on Archbishop Wood holding off Reading High School in a PIAA Class 6 boys basketball second-round game and a companion column about the RHS boys basketball team wondering what might have been.

Reporter Dave Mekeel placed second in the sports feature category for his coverage of Berks fans sharing their excitement about the Philadelphia Phillies playing in the World Series.

"These awards recognize the quality of work readers of the Reading Eagle see every day," Editor Dave Mowery said. "These award winners, as well as the other members of the staff, remain dedicated to keeping our readers informed."

The statewide contest is run by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association. This year, 2,623 entries were submitted from 139 Pennsylvania news organizations. Entries — in 53 regular categories and 12 specialty categories across seven circulation and four broadcast divisions — were judged by journalists in Michigan.
