3-time All-Ohioan Shelby Grover named Mansfield News Journal Girls Basketball Player of the Year
MANSFIELD — Lucas senior Shelby Grover is one of the most decorated high school girls basketball players in Richland County history.
A bold statement, but true.
During her four-year career, Grover earned three All-Ohio honors including first team All-Ohio during the 2022-23 season. She was a second team All-Northwest District selection twice and first team once. And, she added the Division IV Northwest District Player of the Year distinction to her credit this season.
Now, for the first time in her illustrious career, she can be called the Mansfield News Journal Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Grover missed the first half of her senior season with an ankle injury as her Lucas Cubs went 1-8 without her in the lineup before going 8-4 with a tournament win down the backstretch. Grover scored 22 points and added 9.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark.
She earned first team All-District 6 and first team All-Mid-Buckeye Conference honors to go along with her All-Northwest District and All-Ohio recognition in 2022-23. Last year, Grover completed the All-Ohio sweep earning all-state honors in volleyball, basketball and track. So far, she has two of the three knocked out and could sweep it again this spring.
She is headed to Kent State University to continue her track career. On Friday, March 17, Grover traveled to Virginia Beach to compete in the Adidas Indoor Track Nationals where she earned All-American honors taking third in the pentathlon competing in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put long jump and 800-meter run.
Not bad for the 2022-23 Mansfield News Journal Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
