3 new Tri-Cities openings: A night club, Mexican restaurant and special coffee house

Manny Montelongo wants people to slow down a bit and even visit in person after the isolating days of the pandemic.

The Prosser native opened Manny’s Coffee House at 4827 W. Clearwater Ave., Kennewick, as a place to gather, enjoy coffee, food, pastries and one another.

The newly-built shop holds its grand opening March 18, with free drinks for the first 50 customers.

Montelongo is a Prosser native who turned to the coffee business while attending Washington State University in Pullman. The pandemic interrupted his studies and inspired him to open the first Manny’s in an old building in downtown Pullman.

It was a success, but he opted to close it and move back to Prosser in 2022 after his grandmother died. The experience gave him the confidence to lease space in a new building and spend the better part of six months building a comfortable interior where, he hopes, customers will gather to work, study and socialize.

It offers high speed WiFi and welcomes customers who linger.

“It’s brand new. It’s beautiful. We’ve got big ceilings and bright lights,” he told the Herald.

Montelongo comes from a family of entrepreneurs. His mother runs Rosie’s Daycare in Prosser and is well known in the community.

“We’re a family of business owners,” he said.

Manny’s Coffee Shop sources custom roasted coffee from Transient Coffee Co., a Kennewick roaster led by Jessica and Joel Grubbs.

Montelongo said it loved Transient’s coffees and the added support it provides through its social media, barista training and workflow assistance.

“We’ve been posting and she reposts,” he said. Manny’s uses a medium roast coffee that has received five-star ratings during the shop’s quiet startup phase.

The menu also includes teas, smoothies, Italian sodas, energy drinks and other offerings.

The food menu includes sandwiches, avocado toast and a full line of pastries, including both sweet and savory croissants and bagels.

Montelongo said he is sourcing bread from Ethos Bakery in Richland. Meats and cheeses come from local grocers. Everything is local and fresh, he said.

Manny’s is catering to a walk-in crowd but accepts curbside orders, as well. The coffee shop does not have a drive-thru, in part because the site couldn’t accommodate one. That suits his culture, he said.

“We are a coffee shop that really believes in not just doing the drive-thru thing. We really believe in coming inside, in slowing down.”
