May marks the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, where we spotlight the wonderful, tapestried culture and people of Asia and the Pacific Islands. However, since the pandemic, anti-Asian hate crimes have increased and unfortunately haven’t gone away. And despite wins in Hollywood, discrimination and acts of violence against the Asian American community across the United States continue.

This leaves us thinking: How can we do better, and how can we show our genuine support of the Asian American community not just now during AAPI Month, but every day beyond social media posts?

To that, we came up with two things: First, donating to charities that support the Asian American community (such as The Asian American Foundation, Stop AAPI Hate, and Heart of Dinner). Second, highlighting a handful of the many Asian-owned and -founded brands to turn your dollars into financial support.

From delicious foods to high-quality beauty brands and everything in between, here are amazing Asian-owned businesses to shop and support now (and always).

Phlur

2023 may have been the year that Missing Person took #FragranceTok by storm, but if you’re anything like us, you’ll think that the rest of the Phlur portfolio isn’t anything to sleep on, either. Naturally, because with its owner being none other than iconic superblogger and businesswoman Chriselle Lim, you know its offerings are only the best and hottest.

Addiction Tokyo

J-Beauty is no stranger to avant-garde colors and textures, and Addiction Tokyo takes this penchant to attainable levels with its pretty, hyper-realistic formulations that also have superior integrity. Its trendy drops, such as this season’s #mermaidcore fodder, the Out Of Your Shell collection, are a Y2K lover’s dream.

Brightland

We live in a post-pandemic world where fabulous olive oil, vinegar, and honey are a thing, and Brightland absolutely has this market cornered. Its artisanal, consciously-produced condiments — which boast heirloom olives to heritage beekeeping practices — are also super popular for their display quality, particularly with its perennially sold-out artist series.

Not only is this AAPI-founded kitchenware brand loved by Oprah, but its sets and bundles always sell out — its price-quality matrix is simply a study in great value. Tower 28

Tower 28 is the first beauty brand to comply with the National Eczema Association’s guidelines, and it shows: Its 100% clean, vegan formulas are a runaway hit with those with skin sensitivities. From Korean mother-daughter certified Q graders (AKA coffee sommeliers), Bean and Bean is a valentine to NYC coffee brewing: Daughter Jiyoon’s parents trailblazed the New York coffee roastery industry via their Queens shop in 2008. Apart from its fair trade, organic-certified products (half of which is from women-led farms, no less), it also donates 1% of all its proceeds to the Sloth Institute in Costa Rica, which benefits the reintegration of injured baby sloths back into their habitats. Regardless of whether or not you believe in astrology (Ed’s note: Oh, but you simply must!), you probably enjoy reading the personalized labels on Birthdate Co.’s wildly popular birthday candles. As the internet’s #1 astrology gift brand, it probably needs no fanfare, but its thoughtful, well-researched readings and stylish accessory curations are truly elite.

T3

Founded in 2004, T3 is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Kent Yu and Julie Chung. Kent, the son of hairdressers, wanted an elevated version of the humble hair dryer, something worthy of pride of place on his wife’s vanity... and 20 years later, we’re all still reaping the rewards. Known for its focus on sleek design and high-end tech innovations, T3 tools remain one of the best-respected.

The heart of Nazuk’s products is the hair growth-encouraging Usma grass, a revered ingredient in founder Zulmira’s Uyghur culture. Thankfully, Nazuk has us experiencing these amazing benefits without having to book a flight.

With clothes that are roomier and more flattering in the chest area but not necessarily oversized everywhere else, they’re the solution that larger boobs always needed but have never found until now.

Kulfi is the first South Asian-owned makeup brand to launch at Sephora, and starting May 1, shoppers can buy the new bronze shade of its best-selling kajal eyeliner, Jamun Glaze. The brand has also relaunched its Nazar No More campaign, a give-back program supporting mental health dialogue. How it works: 5% of all kajal eyeliner purchases on kulfibeauty.com will be donated to Sad Girls Club, a nonprofit organization providing mental health resources to young WoC.

Our Place

Everyone and their mothers probably picked up an Always Pan during the pandemic, and with good reason: Our Place figured we needed some damn smart consolidation in the kitchen and delivered hard. This AAPI-founded furniture brand is behind OuterShell, a patented piece of technology that changed the game of outdoor furniture protection. Its higher-end pieces are all very form-meets-function, proving that patio furniture need not be limited to kitschy, discount style.

Flower Knows

Between the boom of the coquette aesthetic and having a fan in the coquette queen herself, Lana del Rey, Flower Knows is the newest, downright prettiest addition you need to add to your beauty collection. Its hyper-feminine collections all have super #girlcore themes — rococo, cherubs, swans, ribbons, pastels, shimmer galore! — and are made for anyone who wants to completely romanticize their glam. We’re big fans.

Allies of Skin + PSA

Fly By Jing

Bachan’s

Founder Justin Gill dreamed of bringing his family’s sauce to the market, and now you can enjoy it for yourself. Their umami-filled Japanese Barbecue Sauce is made from an authentic family recipe in small batches and free of preservatives. It’s available in original, yuzu, miso, hot and spicy, and gluten-free.

Pika Pika

Pika Pika is an AAPI- and LGBTQIA-owned brand creating delicious Filipino-inspired spreads such as Calamansi Marmalade and Coconut Spread. Each spread is made from all-natural ingredients without preservatives; its bundles make fabulous hostess gifts, too.

Tinto Amorio

Tinto Amorio is the first South Asian-owned natural wine brand. Their wines are vegan, organic-certified, and have low sulfites. The brand also donates 5% of proceeds to local food banks and has provided over 100,000 meals to the hungry in LA and Orange County so far.

BāKIT Box

Live Tinted

Live Tinted was founded by South-Asian beauty entrepreneur and businesswoman Deepica Mutyala. It’s a clean, vegan, and cruelty-free brand that aims to create products that work on all skin tones; we especially love its color correctors and non-white-casting sunscreen.

Kolkata Chai Co.

Inspired by their trips to Kolkata and a desire to bring an authentic cup of masala chai to New York City, brothers Ayan and Ani Sanyal founded Kolkata Chai Co., dubbed “the best chai in the game.” While their masala chai mix is available in rose and decaf, we’re partial to their signature mix.

AshaPops
