30-year-old man's death while in New Jersey State Police custody under investigation

UPPER DEERFIELD - An investigation is underway into the death of a man who became unresponsive in police custody.

The man, identified only as a 30-year-old, was arrested in Fairfield on July 8 on a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, the Attorney General's Office said in a brief statement.

He became "unresponsive" at the New Jersey State Police Bridgeton station around 8 p.m. on July 9.

The statement, released July 14, said emergency medical personnel were called to the station in Upper Deerfield. Troopers also performed "life-saving measures," it said.

The man was taken to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland, where he died at 11:37 p.m.

A state law requires an investigation into any death that occurs when a person is in police custody or when a person died during an encounter with an officer acting in an official capacity.

"The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time," according to the statement.
