30-year-old woman killed in crash that closed Route 1 for over 3 hours in Milton Thursday

A 30-year-old woman from Clayton has died in a crash that closed both directions of Route 1 near Milton Thursday morning, Delaware State Police said. Two other people were injured.

She has been identified by police as Sheri Foster.

Police said that Foster was driving south in a 2011 Ford Fiesta on Route 1 at 6:47 a.m. when a 2022 Ford Escort pulled in front of her at the intersection with Route 5. The Escort, driven by an 81-year-old man from Millsboro, was heading east on Route 5 and trying to turn left onto Route 1 northbound, according to state police, but failed to wait at the stop sign "for unknown reasons."

The front of the Fiesta hit the back left side of the Escort, sending both cars spinning in opposite directions, police said. The Escort spun off the side of the northbound lanes of Route 1, hitting a fence, and the Fiesta was hit by a 2005 Honda Accord in the middle of the southbound lanes, according to police.

The driver of the Fiesta was taken to the hospital, where she later died, police said. The driver of the Escort and his passenger, a 75-year-old woman from Millsboro, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Accord, a 32-year-old man from Hartly, was not injured, according to police.

Both directions of Route 1 were closed for about three and a half hours.
