From Car and Driver

  • Mercedes-AMG has revealed the first hot version of the CLA Shooting Brake, the CLA35.

  • It shares its mechanicals with the regular CLA35, meaning a 302-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive.

  • Like the non-AMG Shooting Brake, it sadly won't be sold in the United States.

Mercedes-AMG has revealed yet another new compact performance offering: the CLA35 Shooting Brake. It packages the same turbocharged engine and other mechanical bits from the A35 sedan and hatchback, the "four-door coupe" CLA35, and the upcoming GLA35 and GLB35 crossovers into an attractive wagon body that we're infatuated with.

Its turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine makes 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and mates with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system that has a variable torque split of up to 50/50 front-to-rear. Larger brakes, a modified suspension setup, and new steering tuning are in store, too. Mercedes says the Shooting Brake will hit 62 mph in 4.9 seconds and go on to a top speed of 155 mph, matching the figures of the regular CLA35.

The Shooting Brake has already been revealed in non-AMG form, as has the regular CLA35, so there are no real surprises in terms of styling. The sleek roofline and rounded rear end give the Shooting Brake better proportions than the standard CLA, and this AMG version enhances the look further. A twin-bar grille, different bumpers, larger wheels, a new lip for the rear spoiler, and two round exhaust tips nestled in a new diffuser round out the look. An optional appearance package adds some aero bits like a new front splitter and a modified rear spoiler, while a Night package blacks out all of the exterior trim.

It's typical compact Mercedes on the inside, too, with two screens in front of the driver, a funky dashboard design, and the company's new MBUX infotainment system. To set it apart from the basic CLA, the AMG gets a sport steering wheel, a unique center console with additional controls, a model-specific display for the screens, new trim and color options, and a whole bunch of AMG badges.

The CLA35 won't be the highest-performance version of the CLA that AMG will offer. Later this year, the CLA45 will debut with at least 415 horsepower in its top trim, and it will be offered in Shooting Brake form. But as with the other CLA wagons, the CLA45 Shooting Brake won't be sold in the U.S., either. At least the E63 wagon is still offered in the States. You have to find comfort in the little things.
