31-year-old Iowa man serving 15-year prison sentence at Anamosa dies by suicide

A 31-year-old man serving a state prison sentence died by suicide Monday at Anamosa State Penitentiary, according to the Department of Corrections.

Anthony Steven Spurgeon was pronounced dead around 9 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2022, according to a news release. The department is investigating his death.

Spurgeon, a habitual offender who had been convicted five times for domestic abuse, the latest being in 2018 in Wapello County, according to online court records, was serving a 15-year prison sentence. He'd begun his sentence on Aug. 27, 2018.
