The 318: Caddo Parish eyes $100,000 Ring doorbell distribution, $100 million investment

Hello, Shreveport, where Caddo Parish commissioners announced an ordinance Tuesday that would fund the Commission-appointed poet laureate, Poetic X, in an effort to place community-centric poetry in each Parish district.

X would write a poem and an artist selected by the Shreveport Regional Arts Council will paint the poem along with an interpretative illustration onto a vinyl canvas. Each district would have a poem tailored to its history and culture. The murals will be placed in prominent locations in the district.

The murals are expected to take two years to be completed. The Commission planned to vote on approving funding for the mural Thursday but rescheduled the vote for a later meeting.

In an effort to deter violent crime, Caddo Parish commissioners introduced a plan at their Tuesday work session that would give out potentially $100,000 worth of Ring doorbell surveillance cameras to citizens.

The program would require participating residents to register their devices with the Shreveport Crime Center and give law enforcement access to the footage, according to the ordinance approved for the initiative. The first year would serve as a pilot program.

The Commission planned to vote on the initiative at their Thursday meeting but instead decided to reschedule the vote along with most of the night's agenda items.
