35 abandoned dogs seized in Lewes. Now in the care of Brandywine Valley SPCA

The Brandywine Valley SPCA is caring for 32 small-breed dogs and three nursing puppies after they were seized from "deplorable conditions" in Lewes last Tuesday.

"Concerned neighbors" contacted the Office of Animal Welfare and told them no one had been seen at the home in days, according to a news release from Brandywine Valley SPCA. Officers went to the home to find dogs running loose, jumping from an open window and "living in filth with no electricity or running water," the news release said.

The dogs are receiving veterinary care at Brandywine's Georgetown facility. After grooming, spaying and neutering and rehabilitation, they will be available for adoption.

Delaware Animal Services' investigation is ongoing and criminal charges are pending, the news release said. The agency did not immediately respond to requests for information.
