I-35 bridge replacement project set to start in Emporia, won’t be complete till 2025

EMPORIA (KSNT) – The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is gearing up to begin replacement work on an I-35 bridge in Emporia.

Kate Craft with KDOT said in a press release that work crews are slated to start work on the project on Wednesday, Feb. 28 if weather cooperates. The location of the project is on the southbound lanes of I-35 over Lincoln Street.

Work will begin with the construction of temporary crossovers between northbound and southbound I-35 with the inside lanes of I-35 set to close during this period. The crossovers are expected to be finished by April this year.

Craft said the lanes on southbound I-35 will close after the crossover work is complete with northbound I-35 carrying one-lane traffic in each direction through the area. Lincoln Street beneath the highway will be closed to all traffic for the duration of the project.

Drivers on Lincoln Street can follow a detour route on W. 24th Avenue, Prairie Street and Coronado Avenue or use alternate routes. Work will take place Monday through Friday with the end date expected in August, 2025. The primary contractor for the $4.3 million project is King Construction Co. from Hesston, Kansas.
