35-year-old man arrested in Georgia after Portsmouth homicide

A 35-year-old man was arrested Thursday in Georgia for a Portsmouth homicide in January, police said in a news release.

Akime R. Porter was arrested in Lawrenceville, Georgia, for the fatal shooting that happened on Jan. 3, the release said.

Portsmouth police responded to the call about a man with a gunshot wound shortly after 12 a.m. in the 20th block of Merrimac Drive. The man was identified as 32-year-old Tony Lamont Deans, police said.

When officers and medics arrived, he was pronounced dead.

Police said Porter is being charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
