The Greenville neighborhood is called Alta Vista but some folks are more apt to say McDaniel Avenue.

It’s one of the closest neighborhoods — and most exclusive — to downtown Greenville.

Historic homes along the tree-lined streets are notable. And then there’s 605 McDaniel Avenue.

Realtor Alison Pitts, who is selling the property for her parents, calls it “a McDaniel Avenue favorite.”

It’s not as imposing as some of the others, but has that homey feel, like a family home you’d see on a TV sitcom. Many in the area know the house as the one with the fairy garden on a hole at the base of a 100-year-old oak tree in the front.

Pitts’ father put some items out and then kids came along and added more. Then about a year ago, the tree fell.

Pitts said her parents moved there from what’s known as Greenville’s Eastside when she and her brother, who owns Rowan Furniture, moved to downtown Greenville.

The house was built in the 1950s in an area where the McDaniel family had owned thousands of acres in the late 1800s and into the 1900s. One of the McDaniels was sheriff of Greenville County at one point. The family divided their land into lots in the early 1900s for residences.

The house at 605 McDaniel was completely renovated in 2006 — to the studs — and 2,500 square feet were added, bringing the total to 5,500 square feet.

The house has four bedrooms, four bathrooms and two half baths.

“No detail was missed throughout the home, from the antique baluster at the front staircase, to the wormy chestnut mantel and bookshelves in the breakfast area,” Pitts said on the Coldwell Banker Caine/Williams website.

The kitchen has limestone countertops, a maple butcher block island, a six-burner gas Dacor range, two Dacor ovens, two Miele dishwashers, two sinks, and a Sub Zero refrigerator/freezer.

The dining room and living room are in the front of the house and what Pitts described as a “more intimate den” overlooks the covered back porch.

There is a primary suite on the first floor with three large closets, walk-in shower, separate soaking tub, limestone-topped vanities, and one of the three gas converted coal fireplaces that are original to the home.

A private room on the first floor near the laundry room could be used as a den, bonus room or children’s playroom. It has a half bath.

The second floor includes three bedrooms, all with bathrooms and lots of custom-designed closet space.

On the third floor is a finished, heated and cooled attic. The owners use it as a craft and hobby room and for additional storage.

“An original bathroom on the third-floor level leaves a glimpse of life from the 1950s,” Pitts said.

The house sits on less than a half acre but it seems every inch is spoken for, especially in the back where landscape architect Dabney Peeples designed an English garden. A potting shed is located near the two-car garage at the back of the house.

“Dreamy for any gardener,” Pitts said.

She said her parents both love to garden and have cared for the property themselves through the years. They are selling because it’s time for a smaller property.

Overlooking it all is a large, covered porch with a wood-burning fireplace and built-in grill.

The location is a feature as well. It is within walking distance of downtown Greenville, The Swamp Rabbit Trail, Cleveland Park and Greenville Zoo.

The house sold for $585,000 in 2005. The asking price is $3,150,000.
