4 in 10 say Democrats, Biden have accomplished less than expected: poll

Four in 10 registered voters surveyed in a new poll said they think Democrats and President Biden have accomplished less than expected.

The poll, conducted by Morning Consult and Politico, found that 41 percent of registered voters believe congressional Democrats have accomplished less than they expected, compared with 10 percent who believe Democrats on Capitol Hill have accomplished more than they expected.

Thirty-two percent of respondents said congressional Democrats have accomplished about what they expected, and 16 percent did not have an opinion.

When it came to Biden and his agenda, registered voters had similar outlooks on how effective he has been. Forty-two percent of respondents said Biden has accomplished less than they expected, while 11 percent said he has accomplished more than they expected.

Thirty-eight percent of registered voters said Biden has accomplished about what they expected. Nine percent said they did not have an opinion.

The Morning Consult and Politico survey, which polled registered voters from Dec. 18 to Dec. 20, came at the same time Biden and congressional Democrats suffered a searing blow after centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced that he would not vote for the party's social spending and climate package, a major part of Biden's agenda.

Manchin on Sunday said he was unable to support the bill, known as the Build Back Better Act, after months of negotiations between the White House and Capitol Hill.

The poll numbers also come as voting rights legislation continues to stall on Capitol Hill. The House passed two voting rights bills earlier this session, but both have stalled in the upper chamber due to opposition from Senate Republicans.

Democrats and Biden did, however, secure two victories when they passed and enacted a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package in March and a bipartisan infrastructure package last month.

When broken down by party, Democrats were more likely to believe lawmakers from their party and Biden had accomplished more than expected, according to the poll.

Thirty-three percent of Democrats said members of their party have accomplished less than expected, compared with 46 percent of independents and 46 percent of Republicans who agreed.

On the other hand, 18 percent of Democrats polled said lawmakers from their party have accomplished more than expected, while 5 percent of independents and 5 percent of Republicans said the same.

Thirty-nine percent of Democrats said lawmakers from their party have accomplished about what was expected, while 25 percent of independents and 30 percent of Republicans agreed.

When examining Biden's agenda, 28 percent of Democrats said Biden has accomplished less than expected, compared with 46 percent of independents and 55 percent of Republicans who said the same.

Nineteen percent of Democrats said the president has accomplished more than they expected, while 9 percent of independents and 4 percent of Republicans agreed.

Forty-nine percent of Democrats said Biden has accomplished about what was expected, while 27 percent of independents and 36 percent of Republicans said the same.

The poll surveyed 1,998 registered voters. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
