4 Gadsden City High School players sign football scholarships, two others are preferred walk-ons

Four Gadsden City High School football players have received college scholarships and two others will continue their playing careers as preferred walk-ons, according to a news release from the school.

Three players signed with NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams: receiver Clyde Curry with Arkansas State, defensive back Steven Jones Jr. with Georgia Tech and offensive lineman Aaron Wood with Middle Tennessee State. Defensive lineman Elijah Taylor signed with NCAA Division I Foootball Championship Subdivision team East Tennessee State.

The preferred walk-ons are kicker Jake Malone with Samford University and defensive tackle Jackson Veasy with Jacksonville State.

Curry had 61 receptions for 976 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Titans in 2022, all school records. He’s the school’s all-time leader in receptions and ranks third in yards and touchdowns. He earned All-Class 6A, Region 8, honors and participated in the 2022 AHSAA North-South All-Star Game.

Jones had 36 tackles, two interceptions and broke up seven passes as a senior, also was All-Class 6A, Region 8 and took part in the NorthSouth All-Star Game.

Wood, a two-year starter for GCHS, was All-State and All-Region as a senior and took part in the North-South All-Star Game.

Taylor made 100 tackles in 2022, 12 of them for losses. He had eight sacks, forced three fumbles and intercepted a pass. He was an All-Region selection.

Malone made 95% of his extra-point attempts as a senior and averaged 40 yards a punt. He’s the first GCHS player to go to Samford, where he has a full academic scholarship.

Veasy was a four-year starter for the Titans. An All-Region choice in 2022, he had 93 tackles, 21 of them for losses; recorded 10 sacks; broke up four passes; and made one interception.
