4 injured after SUV crashes into school bus in Vancouver

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Four people were injured in a crash involving a school bus and an SUV on Wednesday morning in East Vancouver, authorities said.

The Vancouver Fire Department said the crash happened just after 9 a.m. at 28th Street and 119th Avenue. Police say the SUV ran a red light and struck the side of the bus, which caused the SUV to catch fire.

Officials say there were a total of four minor injuries, and that three of those who were injured were taken to a local hospital. It’s unclear how many children were injured though at this time.

Because initial calls to the scene indicated the SUV was on fire and a bystander used a fire extinguisher, five VFD units responded to the scene. However, officials say the fire was out by the time fire crews responded.

Officials also said some of the children on the bus were taken to a different place before fire crews arrived at the scene, but those children were later accounted for and assessed for potential injuries.

Allison Harding, the principal at Cascade, sent the following statement to families Wednesday afternoon:

We wanted to make you aware that today bus #104 was involved in an accident where a vehicle struck the bus at a traffic light. Students were evacuated immediately from the bus. 911 was called and first responders were on the scene quickly. Other buses arrived shortly after the accident and transported all students to our school.

Once at Cascade, students were greeted by school counselors and were evaluated for injuries by school nurses and members of the Vancouver Fire Department.

We are thankful to our bus driver who reacted quickly to get students off the bus as safely as possible. We also appreciate our first responders who came to our aid.

We know this incident was scary for the students involved, if your student needs any extra support please let us know and we will get them the help they need.
