4 killed after military jet crashes into Russian apartment building

At least four people were killed after a Russian military plane crashed into an apartment building in the city of Yeysk.

Around two dozen were injured in the incident — which was blamed on engine failure — in the southwestern Russia city, near the border with Ukraine. Another six people are still missing, according to Al Jazeera.

Russian-state media said the crash occurred as the plane returned from a training exercise. Footage showed huge flames and sirens blaring as first responders reported to the scene.

“According to a report from the pilots, who jettisoned from the plane, the reason for the crash was a fire in one of the engines during take-off,” the Russian defense ministry said in a statement. Officials said the building was not in danger of collapsing and an investigation into the crash was launched.

The crash was reportedly the 10th non-combat crash of a Russian military plane since the country’s invasion of Ukraine began.
