A $4 million Aldi grocery store is coming to a MS Coast city. Here are the details.

A $4 million building permit has been issued to start construction of an Aldi grocery store in Ocean Springs.

The discount grocery store will be at 3801 Bienville Blvd., by Navigator Credit Union, just west of Walmart Supercenter and Whataburger on the east side of the city.

Mayor Kenny Holloway said the company hasn’t said when the 21,000 square foot store will open.

“They’re waiting for the distribution center to be finished over in Mobile,” he said.

The city will begin improvements at Deana Drive to accommodate the extra traffic, Holloway said. A turn lane and a traffic signal will be added, he said.

Those in and around Ocean Springs have waited for an Aldi since 2018, when it first was announced the chain would be coming to the city.

The deal fell through at that time because of the amount of wetlands on the site, former Ocean Springs Mayor Shea Dobson told the Sun Herald.

Other grocery chains in Ocean Springs are Rouses, Walmart and Winn-Dixie.

Aldi bills itself as offering “no-frills grocery shopping” and selling primarily its own lines of products at low prices.

The Albrecht family opened the first Aldi store in 1961 in Germany. The chain is headquartered in Batavia, Illinois. According to its website, it has more than 2,000 stores across 36 states, and employs more than 25,000 people.

The stores have online shopping, curbside pickup and delivery. The chain also sells seasonal products, housewares, pet supplies and other non-grocery items.

This will be the first location in the three Coastal counties. Aldi will open a store in Picayune this year, according to the company.
