4 Northland schools removed from Minnesota COVID-19 outbreak list

Jun. 11—Four Northland schools were removed from the Minnesota Department of Health's outbreak list Thursday.

A school building is put on the list if it reports five or more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in students or staff who were in a building while infectious during a two-week reporting period. The building is removed after 28 days of no new positive tests.

Lincoln Elementary School in Hibbing, added April 22; Hibbing High School, added March 18; Hermantown Elementary School, added April 1; and Denfeld High School in Duluth, added April 22, were removed from the list Thursday.

These Northland schools still remain on the outbreak list as of Thursday:

Lowell Elementary School, in Duluth, added March 11.

Robert J. Elkington Middle School, in Grand Rapids, added March 11.

Mesabi East High School, in Aurora, added March 18.

Cohasset Elementary School, in Cohasset, added March 25.

West Rapids Elementary School, in Grand Rapids, added March 25.

Virginia High School, added April 8.

East High School, in Duluth, added April 15.

Piedmont Elementary School, in Duluth, added April 22.

King Elementary School, in Deer River, added April 22.

Nashwauk-Keewatin High School, in Nashwauk, added April 29.

Laura MacArthur Elementary School, in Duluth, added April 29.

East Grand Rapids Elementary School, in Grand Rapids, added May 13.

As of Thursday, no new school buildings were added to the list and 59 were removed for a total of 239 buildings remaining on the list.

From May 30 through June 5, there were 112 more positive cases in schools statewide, with 35 new cases among staff and 77 new cases among students. The state reported one staff member spent time in the intensive care unit last week and one student was hospitalized.

Vaccine numbers

Minnesota and Wisconsin health officials reported Thursday another 500 Northland teens got their first COVID-19 vaccine dose over the past week.

Statewide, 13,539 more 12- to 17-year-olds in Minnesota and 11,143 in Wisconsin were vaccinated over the past week. Children 12-15 years old make up more than 50% of vaccinations in teens and preteens.

The number of first doses administered to 12- to 17-year-olds in Northland counties as of Thursday are:

Statewide COVID-19 cases over the past week in youth were: 75, ages 0-4; 74, ages 5-9; 112, ages 10-14; and 100, ages 15-19.
