4-year-old girl hit and killed as she crosses street with her mom, Wisconsin cops say

A 4-year-old girl died and her mother was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in Wisconsin, police say.
The Milwaukee Police Department said the pair were trying to cross a street at 11:25 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, when they were struck by a vehicle traveling “at a high rate of speed.”
“When the vehicle struck that mother, who now has broken bones, and struck that child, who is now dead, they just kept on going... as if they hit a pothole,” Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said in a news briefing streamed by WDJT.
Family said the mother, 27-year-old Gloria Hymes, is “fighting for her life” in the hospital, according to WISN. Gloria Hymes’ uncle, Kendell Hymes, identified the 4-year-old as Zekani Hymes.
“She was an angel. She was adorable, sweet, loved to play with the kids,” Kendell Hymes told WISN. “When she see me or her granny, anybody in the family, she just ran to them. We will definitely miss her.”
Johnson described the circumstances behind the hit-and-run as “garbage.”
“They should be able to go outside and play or cross the street with their parents without having to worry about somebody hitting them and then just leaving the scene,” the mayor said.
Police said Wednesday morning a 30-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday night in connection to the hit-and-run. The suspect was a passenger in a vehicle officers were attempting to pull over, police said, and the 21-year-old driver fled from officers.
The driver crashed in a parking lot and was taken into custody, according to police. The 30-year-old is accused of fleeing on foot before he was eventually detained.
Charges have not been announced. Officers continued to seek at least one more suspect as of Wednesday afternoon.
