4 people dead, 3 injured in Texas after car crash involving human smuggling suspect, police say
State troopers are investigating a car crash in southern Texas that left four people dead and three injured Thursday.
A driver "suspected of human smuggling" crashed into a commercial vehicle while evading law enforcement in Encinal, Texas, a town near the state's border with Mexico, the Texas Department of Public Safety said on Twitter. The three people who were injured are in critical condition, Texas DPS added.
The department did not immediately provide any additional details on the victims or suspect.
The crash comes days after more than 50 people in a tractor trailer in San Antonio died amid sweltering heat. Four people have since been charged in connection to the incident, which officials have called the deadliest smuggling incident on record in U.S. history.
