4 players score in double figures in Dayton’s road win at UMass

The Dayton Flyers went on the road Wednesday night and defeated the UMass Minutemen, 72-54, at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts.

It is UD’s fourth straight win.

DaRon Holmes II led UD with 22 points and seven rebounds. Koby Brea and Toumani Camara each added 11 points while Kobe Elvis scored10. Malachi Smith had seven points and eight assists.

The Flyers had 19 assists as a team and eight turnovers.

Dayton never trailed in this game as they improve to 19-9 overall, 11-4 in the Atlantic 10.

UD is in sole possession of second place in the A-10, one game behind VCU, with three games left in the regular season.

The Flyers scored the first nine points of the game, five points from Brea and four by Holmes. But the Minutemen stayed close in the first half as T.J. Week, Jr. buried a three-pointer to cut it to 19-15 and Isaac Kante’s two free throws got them within two, 25-23, with 4:23 left in the first half.

Smith’s three-pointer extended it to 28-23 and Holmes’ dunk increased it to 30-23 with 3:27 to go until halftime.

Amzil’s trey expanded it to 33-25 and a jumper by Smith put them ahead, 35-25. Holmes’ added another slam helped the Flyers to a 37-27 halftime lead. They outscored the Minutemen, 12-4, to end the first half.

Dayton scored six straight points to start the second half, including two free throws and a layup by Holmes, and a dunk by to push the advantage to 43-27.

Dunks by Holmes and R.J. Blakney increased it to 59-41 and Amzil’s three gave UD a 62-41 lead. Kobe Elvis’ three-pointer helped the Flyers to their largest lead of the game, 70-47.

Dayton’s next game will be Saturday evening when they host the George Mason Patriots at the UD Arena. It is also UD Hall of Fame Day where four new members will be inducted into the UD Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime.
