These 4 Sangamon communities will remain without bus service through at least Jan. 30

Sangamon Mass Transit District will continue to suspend bus service to several outlying communities through at least Jan. 30.

SMTD temporarily halted service to Chatham, Riverton, Rochester and Sherman on Dec. 31 because of staffing shortages. Service was to resume Jan. 18.

SMTD managing director Steve Schoeffel said previously the issues were the result of "a perfect storm" of circumstances, including regular end-of-year vacations, military leave and Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) absences, as well as the usual seasonal sick call-ins.

SMTD had been dealing with "a handful of absences" due to COVID-19 positive tests or exposures to family members.

Passengers in the affected communities can call SMTD’s Access Paratransit office at (217) 522-8594 at least 24 hours in advance to schedule a ride while the service is suspended.

Access Paratransit operates Monday through Friday.
