4-star RB Jeremiah Cobb out of Montgomery Catholic signs with Auburn football

Montgomery Catholic's Jeremiah Cobb (23) runs the ball at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala., on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022. Montgomery Catholic leads Alabama Christian 26-0 at halftime.

AUBURN — As expected, four-star running back Jeremiah Cobb signed with Auburn football on National Signing Day on Wednesday. He's the 19th player in the class of 2023 to join the Tigers out of high school.

Cobb, who played four seasons at Montgomery Catholic, had been committed to Auburn since July, initially giving his pledge to former coach Bryan Harsin and the previous regime. New coach Hugh Freeze maintained an interest in the 5-foot-11, 185-pound back, though, and he's now officially a part of the class.

Freeze has added 33 new players since arriving to the Plains, with 19 coming out of high school, 12 via the transfer portal an additional two pickups from junior college. Cobb is the second running back of this bunch as Auburn added South Florida transfer Brian Battie earlier this month. Cobb and Battie join a backfield that returns expected starter Jarquez Hunter and sophomore Damari Alston.

Cobb is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 166 overall player and the No. 9 running back in the class of 2023. He's also tabbed as the 13th-best recruit in the state. Cobb's 247Sports profile has secondary coach Zac Etheridge listed as his primary recruiter and running backs coach Carnell "Cadillac" Williams as his secondary recruiter.

Cobb finished with 6,567 rushing yards and 75 rushing touchdowns in 50 games at Montgomery Catholic, according to MaxPreps. He also added 1,142 receiving yards and 15 scores through the air.

Kirk Johnson, Cobb's coach at Montgomery Catholic, told the Montgomery Advertiser in December that Freeze took a visit to the school shortly after he landed the Auburn job.

“Freeze and the entire staff came down Friday," Johnson said. "We all sat down, we all talked and it was a good conversation. I thought what Freeze said was spot on. ... I ain’t going to share what he said because I don’t know if he wants that shared, but just kind of his vision of Cobb and the program, and I thought it was great. I thought what he said was perfect.”

Cobb had other SEC offers from Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.
