4 things to do in Milwaukee this weekend, including Mexican Fiesta, Oktoberfest, more
1. Mexican Fiesta
Mexican Fiesta returns to Maier Festival Park Aug. 26-28, with food, music, cultural programming, activities and more than a half-dozen entertainment stages. Other highlights include the festival's popular custom car show, from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 27; and a nightly soccer tournament in the grounds' Urban Park. Mexican Fiesta runs from noon to midnight Aug. 26-28; admission at the gate is $22, free for kids younger than 8 with the purchase of an adult ticket. Info: mexicanfiesta.org/mexican-fiesta.
2. Milwaukee Fringe Festival
The Milwaukee Fringe Festival, a day of live music, dance, theater and other performances, returns for a sixth edition to the Marcus Performing Arts Center starting at 1 p.m. Aug. 27. Tickets for individual performances in the Marcus Center's Vogel Hall are $20, with an all-access pass going for $50; there also are free performances in the outdoor Peck Pavilion starting at 2 p.m., and a program of virtual events as well. There'll be artisan and food vendors on the grounds too. Info: mkefringe.com.
3. Milwaukee Oktoberfest at War Memorial Center
Milwaukee Oktoberfest, the first Oktoberfest bash of the season, encamps Aug. 26-28 outside the War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. The proceedings kick off Aug. 26 with free beer (while it lasts) starting at 4 p.m. There'll be plenty of beer and food from Kegel's Inn for sale, live music, daily stein-hoisting competitions, a wiener dog beauty pageant, a Usinger's brat-eating competition, and more. Admission is free, with daily VIP packages (including a VIP tour of the War Memorial Center) going for $45. Milwaukee Oktoberfest is a fundraiser for the War Memorial Center. 4. WMSE's Backyard BBQ
Community radio station WMSE-FM (91.7) hosts its 12th annual Backyard BBQ Aug. 27 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Humboldt Park Bandshell, 3000 S. Howell Ave. On tap: a quintet of food trucks and a music lineup including the Hungry Williams, Paper Holland, Guerrilla Ghost and, as headliners, the Seratones. Admission is free. Info: wmse.org.
