Joy-Ann Reid of MSNBC is speaking at the Hancher Auditorium as part of a recently added event to the performance venue's 2022-2023 season.

Folks can see Reid, or attend another lecture at the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art with a Grant Wood Fellow.

Here are four things to do this weekend in Iowa City.

Eat a Soul Food Dinner at Coralville Public Library

Friday evening: Johnson County Supervisor Royceann Porter hosts a Soul Food Dinner at the Coralville Public Library at 1401 Fifth St. in Coralville on Friday. Visitors can eat a free meal cooked by Porter and watch a screening of the documentary “Soul Food Junkies” by filmmaker Byron Hurt, who explores soul food through the lens of culinary tradition and relevance to Black cultural identity, according to the filmmaker's website. The film starts at 5 p.m. followed by food and activities, all celebrating Black History Month.

Listen to Mark Burke at Elray’s Live & Dive

Friday night: Country singer-songwriter Mark Burke is performing at Elray’s Live & Dive, 211 Iowa Ave. in Iowa City, at 7 p.m. The “When It Comes to You” and “See You Tonight” singer is based in Nashville, Tennessee, but is a Florida native. Burke is influenced by musicians like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and Craig Campbell. He’s shared the stage with the latter, as well as Luke Bryan, Scotty Emerick and Chris Young. Hear a Grant Wood Fellow talk at UI Stanley Museum of Art

Saturday afternoon: Michael Dixon, a painting and drawing fellow at the Grant Wood Art Colony in Iowa City, will explore his art career in “Unpacking the Demons: Within, Between, and Beyond Race” during a 2 p.m. event at the Stanley Museum of Art is located at 160 W. Burlington St. Dixon, an oil painter is a professor of art at Albion College in Michigan who will present a series of stories that explore his art career, research and personal narrative, including recent and past projects, influences and his biracial identity, according to the Stanley Museum of Art. This event is free to attend and will be in-person and streamed online, accessible through the Stanley Museum of Art’s website.

Sunday afternoon: Journalist and author Joy-Ann Reid of MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” and “AM Joy” takes the stage at Hancher Auditorium, 141 Park Road in Iowa City, at 2 p.m. in this event presented by the auditorium and the University Lecture Committee. The author of “Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide” and “The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling of the American Story” co-hosts the podcast “Reid This/Reid That” and her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian and New York Magazine. Anyone can request two free tickets, available through Hancher Auditorium’s website or at the Hancher Box Office, starting on Friday.
