4 things to do this weekend in Iowa City, including a former 'Voice' contestant

It’s all about the art of listening this weekend thanks to a new symposium that invites Iowa City residents to engage with Afro-Brazilian filmmakers and scholars and an experimental composer’s live performance at Public Space One, among more.

Here are four things to do this weekend in Iowa City, plus two spots for happy hour and brunch.

Experience a new symposium with film screenings and discussions across Iowa City

Friday or Saturday all day: FilmScene and the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art will host lectures, discussions and screenings of films as part of a new symposium from UI associate professor Christopher Harris, educator Janaína Oliveira and scholar Cristiane Lira. The symposium, “Frequências: Contemporary Afro-Brazilian Cinema & the Black Diaspora,” will explore “new ways of thinking about the Black diaspora” and will feature young Afro-Brazilian filmmakers, curators, scholars and programmers whose work has already impacted international cinema, according to a news release. Screenings of films, from narrative shorts to experimental pieces, run through the early evening Saturday at FilmScene. Discussions and presentations will take place at the UI Stanley Museum of Art, FilmScene at the Chauncey and the Becker Communication Studies Building both days. All events are free. Visit the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies’ website for a full schedule of the symposium.
