Skip an afternoon at the golf course for mini golf at some of Iowa City’s most popular restaurants and bars this Saturday.

As folks putt around downtown, Summer of the Arts' free movie series returns with a free screening of "Top Gun: Maverick" in Coralville.

Here are four things to do this weekend in Johnson County, including a pair of spots for happy hour and brunch.

Golf around downtown Iowa City

Saturday afternoon: Mini golf enthusiasts can participate in Iowa City Downtown District’s 2023 Puttin’ Around Downtown, which starts at 2 p.m. Pre-registered teams up to four people will check in, get a scorecard and head into 17 different businesses to experience their unique courses. Holes will be stationed at Donnelly’s, Elray’s Live & Dive, Gabe’s, Joe’s Place, Players, Short’s Burger & Shine, Yotopia and more. Catch the ‘Duchess of Coolsville’ at the Englert Theatre

Sunday evening: The “Chuck E.’s in Love” and Grammy Award-winning singer Rickie Lee Jones brings her array of jazz, folk and pop sounds to the Englert Theatre. Jones' second and highly acclaimed album “Pirates” in 1981 is No. 49 on NPR’s 150 Greatest Albums Made by Women list. The Illinois native rose to fame in 1979 with “Chuck E.’s In Love” and not only captured audiences with her sound, but by wearing a beret for a time. Decades later, Jones has released over two dozen albums while she released her memoir “Last Chance Texaco: Chronicles of an American Troubadour” in 2021. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. at the performance venue located at 221 E. Washington St. Tickets are $44 and can be purchased on the Englert Theatre’s website.

Get your pop and candy ready for a free flick

Saturday evening: You don’t need to go to the movie theaters this weekend to catch a movie on the big screen. Summer of the Arts’ free movie series returns for another season this Saturday with the 2022 movie “Top Gun: Maverick.” The Tom Cruise action flick is a sequel to the 1986 movie “Top Gun” and follows Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he trains Top Gun graduates and reconnects with the son of his dead best friend. The film was the No. 1 movie at the box office worldwide, Screen Rant reported and won an Academy Award. The movie starts at 9 p.m. at Brown Deer Golf Course, 1900 Country Club Dr. in Coralville. Experience a rhubarb extravaganza at Ackerman Winery

Saturday afternoon: It’s rhubarb season, and Ackerman Winery in Amana is celebrating with specials all day. Dig into rhubarb treats, rhubarb slushies, rhubarb lemonade and rhubarb wine. Bundles of fresh rhubarb will also be for sale. Ackerman Winery is located at 4406 220th Trail in Amana and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Eat brunch or hang with friends at happy hour in Johnson County

Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening: Joe’s Place, located at 115 Iowa Ave., is an easy spot to turn to for happy hour in downtown Iowa City. Enjoy $1 off all draft beers and $8 domestic pitchers from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday or Sunday: The Copper Boar in North Liberty serves brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Treat yourself to lemon meringue waffles, a prime rib breakfast sandwich complete with an egg or breakfast pizza loaded with ham and bacon. Mimosas are $1. The Copper Boar is located at 575 Cameron Way, unit B.
