Here are 4 things to do this weekend in Johnson County, including a Wilson's Orchard & Farm bash

It’s the first weekend of August and summer is still going strong with rising temperatures and these Johnson County events underway.

As Wilson’s Orchard & Farm prepares for a busy Saturday featuring a fun run and obstacle course followed by an all-day summer bash, FilmScene is inviting guests to enjoy movies of the past in its “Screwball Summer” series.

Here are four things to do this weekend in Johnson County.

Mini Music Series on the Patio at Bread Garden Market

There’s been a few ways to catch free, live music performances throughout Johnson County from Summer of the Arts' northside Iowa City concerts and the Ranshaw House concert series in North Liberty to Big Grove Brewery’s Summer Jam concert series.

Now, you can round out that experience with the second installment of the Mini Music Series in the Patio at Bread Garden Market & Bakery on Saturday.

Last Saturday, the market kicked off the series with a performance by the Nic Arp Band, a five-piece band led by the Iowa City songwriter and musician.

This week, Corey Kendrick and the Organ-i-zation will play some tunes near the downtown playground and the patio outside of Bread Garden Market. Kendrick is a jazz pianist, composer, recording artist and educator who has toured with Wycliffe Gordon, Marquis Hill and dozens more. The musician is the director of instrumental music at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois.

The concert starts at 7 p.m.

The sprawling hills of Wilson’s Orchard & Farm will be transformed into an obstacle course for adults and children to participate in Saturday.

The return of the third annual Dingleberry Dash — named after the road the farm is located on — presents obstacles from tire-hopping, a log jump, hay bale jump and more, and ends with a Slip ‘n Slide.

The fun run benefits the nonprofit Girls on the Run.

Girls on the Run’s mission is to inspire girls to be healthy and confident by incorporating running while providing them the skills they need to successfully navigate life.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and costs $45 for an adult ticket and $35 for a children's ticket. For an extra $15 and $10 respectively, racers can get in on the brunch buffet after.

Dingleberry Dash kicks off at 9:30 a.m.

Continuing Saturday’s fun at Wilson’s Orchard & Farm is its Big Summertime Bash 2.0.

The summer celebration goes from 11 a.m. through 9 p.m., inviting people to stop by the farm for the following:

  • Complimentary cider tasting

  • Bakery specials

  • Kids’ crafts

  • Wilson’s Smokehouse specials

  • Tie-dye shirts

  • Slip ‘n Slide

  • Bounce house

  • Carnival games

  • Face painting

Special events include a balloon artist from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., painting opportunities with Brush & Barrel from noon until 3 p.m., and the music group the Brick Street Ramblers from 5-7 p.m.

Through Aug. 19, families and kids are invited to find Rusty hidden across 29 stores in downtown Iowa City to receive a small prize and be entered to win a grand prize basket.

Scavenger hunters are tasked to find at least 10 hidden Rustys. Each time he’s found, people will get a stamp on their card, which can be found and printed off the Iowa City Downtown District’s website.

“Screwball Summer Starring Cary Grant” is a month-long tribute at FilmScene to the subgenre that “satirizes the traditional love story,” according to Screenrant.com, all featuring one of Hollywood’s most popular leading men.

The genre was popular through the 1930s and early ‘40s, and hallmarks included witty dialogue, strong female characters and slapstick comedy.

“Screwball Summer” starts with a screening of the 1937 film “The Awful Truth” on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a showing on Sunday at 4 p.m. and Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m.

The event continues with the films “His Girl Friday,” “Holiday” and “The Philadelphia Story.”

FilmScene members get to enjoy any film that is part of “Screwball Summer” for 25 cents, a throwback to the price of movies in the 1930s.
