About 40 dead dolphins and 3 whales have washed up in Mauritius since oil spill

Dolphins off the coast of Mauritius are dying at an alarming rate weeks after a ship spilled thousands of gallons of oil in the area.

Around 40 dolphins have washed ashore in recent days, Reuters reported. None of the dolphins’ causes of death have been confirmed.

Three dead whales have also washed up on the beaches of the island nation, according to the Associated Press, which put its dead dolphin count at exactly 39 as of Thursday.

A fisherman told Reuters that he spotted between 25 and 30 dead dolphins floating in a lagoon, in addition the animals that have already washed up.
