With 40 fatalities so far in 2023, this Florida county tops among dangerous places to drive

According to the AAA, an average of 2,108 teens are involved in deadly crashes, every year.

Being known for constant sunshine and endless vacation weather, Florida also has the stereotype of having some of the worst drivers in the country. But does the label have merit?

In a study of the most dangerous places to drive within Florida, Lee County nabbed the ninth spot with over 6,000 crashes so far this year.

Conducted by personal injury attorneys Injured in Florida, a study analyzed Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles data to reveal the number of crashes in each county in Florida that have occurred so far in 2023. The data was used to determine the number of crashes that occur for every 10,000 people in each county.

A spokesperson said they have already found an increase in crashes from last year.

“Despite this data only accounting for incidents occurring between January and May of this year, there has already been a 13% increase in motor vehicle incidents compared to last year. In 2022, there was a total of 391,901 motor vehicle incidents, averaging 1,074 incidents per day," a spokesperson from Injured in Florida says.

"As of January and May this year, there have been 146,064 motor vehicle incidents which resulted in 1,256 fatalities. This averages ten deaths per day and 1,217 incidents per day, revealing that the number of crashes so far this year is particularly high.”

How dangerous is Lee County to drive in?

Lee County placed ninth on the most dangerous places to drive in Florida. With a population of over 800,000, Lee County has seen a total of 6,224 crashes between January 2023 and May 2023, resulting in 40 fatalities. This equates to 76 crashes per 10,000 residents.

Compared to other counties with a larger population, Seminole County experienced 2,369 crashes between January 2023 and May 2023, resulting in 22 fatalities. According to data, Layfette County, northeast of Gainesville, sits at the bottom of the study's list of most dangerous counties for Florida drivers. Compared to other counties, Layfette County experienced 15 crashes so far this year, none of which ended in fatalities. With a population of less than 10,000 already, this equates to 19 crashes per 10,000 residents.
