About 40 Gadsden City High athletes assist with storm clean-up
Athletes from Gadsden City High School were on Lookout Mountain on Monday to help with clean-up from last week’s storm.
The area was pounded by 80-90 mph straight-line winds on Thursday that downed trees and damaged homes.
Amanda Lewis, women’s athletic director for the school, said coaches were able to mobilize roughly 40 athletes to contribute their time.
“Gadsden City isn’t a place we work,” she said. “It’s a place we live, and we take pride in serving our community and instilling that work ethic in our athletes.”
Superintendent Tony Reddick, who spoke to the group before they deployed, said it was a thrill to see the athletes “make a commitment to their community at such an early age.”
He said he shared that taking on such leadership roles could benefit them on college applications and job resumes, but he was impressed that they stepped up when asked by their coaches. He said they showed a strong work ethic in facing what he called “a disaster that unfolded” and making people’s lives in the area better.
“I’m proud of them,” Reddick said.
